Information
about the resort of Almerimar on the Costa de Almeria, Andalucia,
Spain.
Almerimar
is one of Spain's best kept secrets. The resort is situated only
35 kilometres from the city of Almeria and 192 kilometres from Malaga.
Both these cities' airports are served extensively by regular scheduled
and charter flights from most European cities. By road, the main
east/south coast motorway (N340/E15) exit for Almerimar is just
4 Km away.
Almerimar
is a purpose built tourist and sport resort that has been specifically
developed over the last 25 years to facilitate the visitor. Building
has been limited to a maximum height and all new developments must
provide for green and shady areas.
Although centred on its marina and golf course, Almerimar is not just a port; its location constitutes an oasis in the middle of
an arid zone of incomparable wild beauty.
If you are looking for
relaxation without feeling isolated, welcome to Almerimar!
In Almerimar you will find all the services you would expect in a modern city: a wide
choice of restaurants, tapas bars, and pubs, several supermarkets (including an "English Shop"), laundry services, all kinds of shops, video/DVD rentals, discos, English/German speaking doctors, veterinary clinic, etc.
The Spanish never need much of an excuse for a party and the numerous fiestas and
fairs are the ideal occasions to meet the local people. Typical Andalusians, they are a warm, generous, proud, and trusting people that you will not forget.
All this, together with the opportunity to practise almost any kind of outdoor
activity/sports in perfect weather conditions, guarantees an enjoyable stay in Almerimar.
Here are some of the activities and sports we found to be available in Almerimar. If
you would like more information about any of them, just contact us and we will try to get you an answer.
Golf: Golf Almerimar has broad and shaded fairways surrounded by exuberant vegetation which adds difficulty to green approaches while well-positioned bunkers and water traps add variety. Opened in 1976, it was designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby. A beautiful spot due to the lakes and palm trees on the course, Almerimar Golf Club is attached to the AR Almerimar Hotel. It has wide tree lined fairways and large greens which are well maintained and fast to play on. There are water features at several holes. The 100 metre over the lake shot to reach the par 3 hole 12 is a real challenge. The lush vegetation affords a pleasant oasis-style feel to a round as the palm trees and lakes create spots of spectacular beauty.
All 27 holes re-opened on 20 December 2007 after a complete refurbishment that started in 2005. Improvements include a new irrigation system, new lake at tee 1, tees and fairways have been improved, greens have been replaced and increased in size, bunkers have been renewed and some have been extended, new bunkers on holes 5 and 7, some tees have been elevated, all holes have been extended, the practice facilities have been improved.
Facilities include: Pitching and putting green, driving range, restaurant, parking, changing rooms, showers, pro shop, tuition, swimming pool, tennis courts, buggies, trolleys, and club rental.

OTHER GOLF COURSES WITHIN 1 HOUR'S DRIVE:
DESERT SPRINGS: A tough "Arizona golf" challenge with a contrast of beautifully prepared and manicured playing areas set in the arid yet vividly coloured desert. The challenge is further accentuated by water meandering through the course and fast undulating greens.
LA ENVIA GOLF: Spectacular views and dramatic scenery make La Envia a course to remember. Positioned in a valley surrounded by a mountain and desert landscape. Only a few water hazards to conquer but with the undulating layout and carefully positioned pins this adds to the challenge of the La Envia course.
MARINA DE LA TORRE: Split into two distinct nine holes on either side of the "Torre" the course offers a mixture of parkland and undulating terrain. The clubhouse side of the course is relatively flat while the other side is on and over the hill and requires accurate shot play and great concentration.
PLAYA SERENA: A beautifully presented course with lovely fairways and good greens that offers a fine test of golf for all handicaps. A relatively flat parklands course, dominated by nine lakes which are home to a variety of exotic birds.
VALLE DEL ESTE: "Natural and spectacular" are the words most used to describe this course with beautiful fairways, tees and greens set amidst a stunning mountain backdrop, desert vegetation and various water features. The course has large greens, testing fairways, lakes and a magnificent cascading waterfall.
Sailing: The excellent climate allows sailing to be practised all year round. For those new to the sport, or wishing to learn more, there is a
sailing school, where all necessary equipment is provided.
Windsurfing: Although this and kite-surfing are fairly new sports in Almerimar, they are gaining
in popularity and can also be learnt with expert teachers.
Scuba Diving: Those fond of diving will find crystalline waters
and underwater scenery of special beauty. All of these make Almerimar an ideal place to join in this sport. For those who may wish to learn this sport, there are two diving schools.
Horse riding: There are two horse-riding stables, both offer cross-country and beach rides and instruction for those just beginning.
Beaches: East and West of the marina, stretch miles of BLUE FLAG beaches. The beaches are well cared for
and, during the summer season, they are cleaned every day and lifeguards are on duty. There are ample fresh water showers and toilets.
Many sports and other facilities are available on the beaches including windsurfing, kite surfing, hang-gliding, beach volleyball,
football, pedal boats, jet skis, not to mention the beach bars.
During the high season the local council organises many sporting events on the beach
including football and beach volleyball tournaments and a pentathlon.
Angling: The variety of fish that is caught locally is quite extensive and many a hobby angler has his boat moored
in the marina. Many people also fish from the beaches and breakwaters as well as the harbour walls.
There is also a flourishing
local fishing trade and important quantities of tuna are caught every day in season.
Bird Watching: The natural park of Punta Entinas, a large expanse of salt marshland to the east of Almerimar, is famous for the
flamingos, ducks, and gulls that inhabit this area.
Cañada de Las Norias is one of the examples of a nature reserve emerging thanks to mankind's intervention. Indeed, in this case, its almost accidental creation is due to the damp areas that emerged over an area of some 130 hectares from land extractions made for construction of the first greenhouses in the region. As the salty aquifers rose, a considerable amount of lacustrian vegetation emerged, which has since become a natural refuge for sedentary and migrating birds. Cañada de Las Norias is nowadays one of the main European reserves of the Malvasia Duck (oxyura leucocephala). In 1977 there were just twenty of these ducks in Spain, and there are now more than a hundred. They are but one of the fifty protected species to be found regularly in this landscape.
Mountain Biking/Walking: The famous Alpujarras mountain range begins by Berja, less than a half-hour's drive away.
Skiing/Snow boarding: Almerimar is only about one hour's drive from the snows of the Sierra Nevada, one of the best ski areas in Europe.
Sightseeing: One of the more unusual tours you can take is to visit one of the greenhouses and learn all about the methods
used and enjoy samples of the produce. There are also many other more conventional sights to visit in the area.
Just 5 Kilometres from Almerimar is the bustling old town of El Ejido which, although now enjoying one of the highest per capita incomes
in Andalucia, still holds its weekly market and clings to its ancient traditions. It is a town of contrasts where, just around the corner from the finest and newest, can be found the
typical shaded and beautifully tiled "Patio Andaluz".
Situated between Almerimar and El Ejido is one of the largest shopping malls in the province including a hypermarket, several fast food outlets, a
multiplex cinema, and dozens of shops of all kinds. Co-located with this shopping complex is a recently built hospital fully equipped with the finest modern medical
equipment. The half-hourly bus service between Almerimar and El Ejido stops at this complex.
