Occupying the major part (mainland 492,592 Km2) of the Iberian Peninsula in southwest Europe, the kingdom of Spain is a country of
contrasts. The central elevated plain has hot summers and cold winters, while the southern coastal regions at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains (highest peak in continental Spain = Mulhacén - 3,478 m) have the
warmest winter temperatures in mainland Europe.
Broadly speaking, Spain is bordered by France in the north, Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean on the west, and the Mediterranean on the east and south.
The country is divided into 17 autonomous regions which are based on the old
Christian and Moorish kingdoms. For administrative purposes, these are further subdivided into provinces of which there are 50 in all. The capital is Madrid, which is also the nation's largest city.
The most southerly part of Spain is the autonomous region of Andalucia. The chief
cities of Andalucia are Seville, Córdoba, and Granada, with Málaga (on the Mediterranean), and Cádiz (on the Atlantic) being the most important ports.
